The Therapeutic Process

Many people may feel nervous before they attend their first therapeutic session. This is a normal feeling to experience. You may feel uncertain of what to say, do or expect. Part of my role is to help guide you. You do not have to prepare anything for this, just bring yourself.

What to expect from your first session:

The first session is usually a longer session (50 to 75 minutes). This will give you enough time to complete some paperwork and allow us to go through the administrative side of therapy (including how to book sessions, cancel sessions, fees, informed consent and confidentiality).

I will also ask you a few questions related to your past and present in order to gain a better understanding of the reasons that brought you to the therapeutic space. This will also allow me to get a better understanding of who you are and where you come from. Therapy should not be rushed and we will, therefore, set the pace together. I will not push you to talk about anything you are not ready to talk about.

What to expect from subsequent sessions:

Sessions are 50 minutes in duration. It usually takes a few (or many) sessions for you to feel completely comfortable and trusting in the therapeutic space. This is where we start to explore the reasons that brought you to therapy and allow you a space to tell your story.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
